D & W Fuse Factory, Auburn, RI
D & W Fuse Company was established in 1894 and Incorporated in 1897 1. They were incorporated by Louis W Downes, William C Woodeard, Louis T Downes, Adolph T Vigneron, David C Moulton, Dutee Wilcox and George K Cranston. Capital stock was $50,000 9. In 1898 returns for the company were listed as Capital stock, actually paid in, $10,00; value of real estate, none; value of personal assets, $432,117.19; amount of debts and liabilities \, $2,806.03 10. Their specialty was the manufacturing of enclosed fuses for electric service and power service. At the time the enclosed fuse was not know as a commercial article either in the US or abroad 2. In 1897 total floor space for the company was 320 squarer feet and only 2 men were needed for the work.

In 1904 D & W secured the contract for furnishing the entire fuse equipment of the Manhattan elevated railway, New York city 5.

In 1906 the company had a new plant on Hathaway street, off Elmwood Avenue, is 80,000 square feet and employs about 300 men 2.



In 1907 William D Ligon was appointed factory manager for the company 4.

The 1908 officers were Dutee Wilcox, President, Louis W Downes, Vice President and Manager, William C Woodward, Treasurer and Willard S Sisson, Secretary 13.

In 1912 the company erected a new addition, 2 stories, 55x22 ft 7.

In 1915, The McGraw Electrical Directory, Electric Railway Edition Dutee Wilcox is President, Louis W Downes is Vice President and General Manager and Willard S Sisson is Secretary and Treasurer 12.

In 1920 General Electric took over the plant and ran it under the name D & W Fuse Fuse Works of General Electric of Providence, RI 3.

In 1920, D & W was given the copyright to the name Deltabeston Wires 6.

In 1922, Howard Dutee Wilcox is the Director of the company 11.

INDUSTRIAL ACCIDENTS

In 1902 and 1903 there were 2 industrial accidents reported at the plant. On December 19th, 1902, James Ahern lost the top of his first finger on his right hand using a power press. cause was stated as being misfortune 13. Then on August 27th, 1903, Jose Cardrilla lost the top third of his finger using a power press. This too was caused by misfortune 14.
