The 1960 Detroit Auto Show These pages are memorabilia from the 1960 Detroit Auto Show at which the 61 Comet was one of the cars introduced! Newly Built Cobo Hall in 1960 ![]() ![]() 1960 National Automobile Show Here is some memorabilia I own from the 1960 National Automobile Show in Detroit, MI at Cobo Hall on October 15th to the 23rd. To this day, Cobo's top auto show attendance was 1,403,873, set in 1960, at this show, when the Hall officially opened. It is where the 1961 Comet was introduced to the world. Above is a picture of Cobo Hall when it opened in 1960. Below is an original un-used ticket for the show. Although there were 1.4 million tickets sold, I wonder how many survived, especially in un-used condition! Below that are the cover and 6 pages from the program where the comet is mentioned. One is a full-page ad for the Comet. There is the "What's New in '61 Models" page which mentions that the 61 Comet has a bigger engine available as an option. On the "Stars Of The Show" pages the 61 Comet has it's changes and improvements describes as well as a nice picture. The "Major Specifications for 1961 US Makes" page interestingly lists the Comet separately from Mercury makes as it was not really a Mercury until 1962. There is a nice "Guide To The Exhibits" page that show where the Comet display was located. Last, on the back cover, there is a US Steel ad with side views of a lot of 1961 cars, including the Comet! Incidentally the color of the Comet on that page is exactly like mine! Below the program are 4 press release pages about the show. Then we have a Stamp issues by the USPS in honor of the show. There is also a picture of the Comet from the Detroit Times from an article about the show. Below that we have First Day Covers issued on the first day of the show by the USPS. After that I found an insert that went into the Detroit Free Press on October 16th. Inside are great color pictures of all the cars in the show! I have included the picture of the 61 Comet. Next down is all the press on the show followed by a car I think should have been called the Comet, the Ford concept car called the Gyron. ![]() ![]()
Comet??? Now here is a car that definitly could be called Comet! It was actually a concept car called the 1961 Ford Gyron. First shown at this show. It had only two wheels and stayed balanced using two gyros. It unfortunatly was never produced. |
